Founder Mode Episode 78 - Google's Storyteller Walked Out with Claire Stapleton

Google's Storyteller Walked Out with Claire Stapleton

Welcome back to Founder Mode!

Jason and I sat down with Claire, who spent twelve years inside Google and YouTube, first ghostwriting for Larry Page, then working in Google's Creative Lab before moving into marketing and social media at YouTube. In 2018, she co-organized the Google walkout, 20,000 employees who walked out over how the company handled sexual harassment allegations. She left in 2019, and this year published her memoir, "Don't Be Evil."

Claire's story is really about what happens when a company's culture becomes a brand promise, and that promise gets tested in public. Google sold "don't be evil" so hard and so long that its own employees eventually held the company to it, right up to a company-wide walkout. We talked about the subway ride home the day it all became real for her, the strange experience of reading talking points written about herself the same way she used to write them about everyone else, and how, even after everything, she still calls it a low-key great company to have worked for.

I closed the episode with five takeaways, straight from the show:

  1. Your culture is a promise, not a slogan. Say "don't be evil" loud enough and long enough, and your own people will hold you to it.
  2. Watch for teams that start marketing to you instead of to your customers.
  3. Too much money kills constraints. Five smartwatch teams and dozens of people running one social account is what happens when nobody has to choose.
  4. Don't adopt your company's worldview as your own.
  5. Quiet isn't agreement. When jobs are scarce, people stop speaking up, but they don't stop noticing.
"Your company gets to tell a story. Make sure you still own yours."

Final Thoughts

What stuck with Jason was Claire's subway ride home, the "what have I done" feeling, then reading the talking points about herself written the way she used to write them about everyone else. And she's still grateful. Low-key greatest company, she said. That's not someone with an axe to grind, and that's what made this conversation worth having.

If you've ever worked somewhere that felt like a calling, send this episode to someone who's still in that place. Then subscribe, leave a review, and drop a comment. Pick up Claire's book, "Don't Be Evil," on Amazon, and read her Tech Support column on Substack.
